”CBD has been used for both dogs and humans with epilepsy because of the fact that it reduces seizures by calming down excess electrical activity in the brain”

Will CBD oil help with seizures in dogs?

A recent story of a epileptic Staffy who was given CBD oil for seizure relief is truly remarkable. Let’s see how CBD for seizures in dogs helped.

His owners, desperate to help their beloved pet and improve his quality of life, decided to try CBD oil and were amazed by how much it helped.

All other medication including steroids had failed to treat the seizures, but since taking CBD  this dog has not had a single seizure.

So, let’s take a look at the effects of CBD for seizures in Dogs!

The Story of Grizzler...

Take a look at this wonderful story below, of how CBD Oil helped to improve the quality of life for this Staffy named Grizzler.

This was written by his owners on an online forum:

“Our 12 yr old staffordshire terrier cross has CMN (common variable immune deficiency).

He has had progressively worsening seizure-type activity for the past 3 years. I did a lot of research into cannabis, including all of its potential uses and especially that it is good for inflammation.

Well, Grizzler’s seizures started with mild muscle twitches around his face, neck and shoulders – what we thought were just occasional micro seizures. He was put on a low dose of Carbatrol and we assumed that the twitches were just part of his CMN, and would never lead to bigger and more frequent seizures.

They did though, and he had his first full blown seizure at 1am one morning about 18 months ago. We could not hold him up as he flopped from side to side… it was incredibly scary. He stopped breathing at one point and we were sure he had died – I actually went out to my car to get a pillow case so that I could wrap him in something before driving him to the emergency vet!

It turns out that they are not seizures as such, but episodes of uncontrolled twitching and clenching.

We have tried different medications etc… steroids, anti epileptics, anti anxiety meds… nothing seemed to stop the episodes. It is frustrating as he would be doing so well and within a couple of days it would start again – often worse than the time before. We were at our wits end with no hope in sight.

And then I read about CBD oil and started doing some research – including going to see a neurologist who specialized in epilepsy. He told me about lots of research he had been doing on lots of dogs with similar conditions, and all seemed very positive.

I’m not a ‘dr person’ by any means but Grizzler is a very well mannered dog so I decided to try him on CBD oil for his seizures.

The difference in just a couple of weeks has been amazing – at the start, we would have about an hour’s break between them and now we are having a few hours between episodes.

The twitches that used to affect his whole body now only affect his face and neck… he can still function, play, eat etc during it – but it is not as dramatic. I certainly do not want to run the risk of these episodes getting any worse!…….”

What can I give my dog to help with seizures?

CBD oil is an amazing product and has helped thousands of people treat a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain and arthritis.

The reason it can be so effective and beneficial for our pets is because CBD (cannabidiol) comes from the hemp plant; not only that, but it does not contain the psychoactive compounds that are found in marijuana.

CBD oil has not only been used as an effective treatment for humans – it’s now being used successfully on pets too! This is because all mammals share the same ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM.

How CBD works in all Mammals

To understand why CBD is reported to have these therapeutic health benefits, we need to understand a little more about the ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM (ECS) that is present in ALL mammals—and that includes you, me, and your pets!

Our brains (and dogs’ and cats’ brains) naturally produce cannabinoids, which then attach to different cells throughout the body called CB1 and CB2 receptors. These are really important for regulating a whole host of different things such as sleep, memory, and even immune responses.

These specific receptors can also interact with plant-derived cannabinoids such as CBD oil to bring a host of positive health benefits including seizure control!

CBD keeps a positive Balance

The endocannabinoid system and its receptors benefit from CBD Cannabinoids interacting with the central and peripheral nervous systems, according to scientists.

This is why CBD Oil for Dogs maintains a good balance in the body and keeps it healthy, or what is known as maintaining a positive balance, or homeostasis [1]

The body’s ability to maintain stable health by regulating internal circumstances is called homeostasis. This occurs in all living things and is an important aspect of overall health.

Your body would not be able to react to nutritional imbalances, regulate temperature, or reduce inflammation on a regular basis if homeostasis were interrupted.

This process maintains your body in check and operating according to design.

CBD for dog seizures study

Seizures and epilepsy in dogs can be tough to cure because there are a variety of potential reasons.

CBD has been demonstrated to help people with seizures, so it’s hardly unreasonable to think it might do the same for our dogs. Many people have applied CBD oil as a natural remedy for various types of dog seizures, with really promising outcomes.

Several distinct veterinary schools currently have ongoing clinical trials examining the effectiveness of CBD. Some of their findings have already been revealed, and they appear very promising.

The AKC (American Kennel Club) has also announced a breakthrough in CBD clinical trials, with additional data from dog owners supporting the claim that it may relieve pain, especially neuropathic pain, as well as help to control seizures. {2}.

Plus CBD has been shown to lessen the severity and occurrence of epileptic fits in dogs. Because of the severe tightening of muscles that occurs during a seizure, pain is often associated with it. CBD can also aid in managing this discomfort.

CBD is an effective anti-anxiety treatment, which allows your pet to regain control. Anxiety can have physical symptoms as well, which make seizure side effects worse. So, by including CBD in your dog’s seizure therapy plan, you may also help alleviate their anxiety caused by each seizure!

Can CBD cause dog seizures?

Scientists have found in a small study that 89 percent of dogs who received CBD in the clinical trial had a reduction in the frequency of seizures. Nine dogs were treated with CBD, while seven in a control group were treated with a placebo.[3]

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the psychoactive component in marijuana that gives users a head high. CBD products extracted from a hemp plant, on the other hand, are devoid of poisons, psychotropic effects, and other comparable negative side effects. Because the hemp plant itself contains less than 0.3%, THC.

However, high-quality CBD is safe for dogs and people. There have been no reported negative effects from the use of CBD in dogs or people so far.

But before we take a look at these, lets just look at  how to choose an effective oil.

Can I use human CBD oil on dogs?

Technically, yes, you can give your dog human CBD oil. You can give your dog human CBD oil because the endocannabinoid system that humans have is a system that dogs also have. That means it works in the same biological way in dogs that it does in people.

Most mammals also have the same endocannabinoid system. That is why you can technically give your dog CBD oil that is made for human use.

Many pet owners have tried human CBD oil in their pets to see how they react.

However, many pet parents then begin buying CBD that is specially formulated for dogs or animals.

What type of CBD is best for dogs?

If you and your veterinarian decide that you should try CBD as a treatment for your dog, there are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing CBD oil.

Also be aware that not all oils are the same,  you’ll want to ensure you choose a high-quality CBD oil.

What’s the origin of your CBD oil? Where did the plants come from? Has the vendor grown their own plants or purchased them from a low-cost seller?

Whole plant extract

Make sure it’s whole plant extract for the ‘entourage effect’ of the oil.

You have over 100 separate ingredients within the cannabis plant and those can all interact with each other in a positive way giving more health benefits

Verified 3rd party testing

This is a quality control process where an independent organisation reviews a product to see if it meets certain standards.

Make sure that they are using green extraction methods such as Co2 to break down the plant to extract the essential oil, companies cutting corners will use solvents such as acetone which could be toxic.

Carrier oil

CBD is very concentrated from the hemp plant and needs to be diluted and preserved with a carrier oil.

The ideal one is hemp seed oil which won’t cause digestive issues.
